at the United Irish Cultural Center

Fort Sumter – the War Begins
Charleston, South Carolina has been an important US seaport since the
revolutionary war period. Throughout the period fortresses had been constructed in
Charleston Harbor to defend against hostile attacks from the sea. As secession of
southern states began on December 20, 1860, these forts were gradually taken over
by the state of South Carolina and then by the new Confederacy with Fort Sumter
the last to fall. The days leading up to April 14, 1861 were filled with drama and
excitement and as we know, Sumter’s shelling and ultimate surrender sparked the
beginning of the Civil War.
PAUL G RUUD’s final career position was serving as the Dean of Science,
Math and Engineering at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, California. This
capped a career that began as a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point
followed by 24 years of active military service. After receiving a Ph D in Statistics,
ten of those years were spent on the Mathematics faculty of the US Air Force
Academy. Other tours included three years of intelligence work in France and a
year at US Headquarters in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Following his
Air Force career and before joining Cosumnes River College he served as a
professor at the University of Southern California and later at the University of
Pacific in Stockton, California.
Paul is a long-standing member and a past president of the Sacramento
