The meeting commenced with some business items. The following issues were raised, discussed and approved:
The By Laws were approved as submitted (typographical errors excepted). Patrick Doyle was elected Secretary for the 2008-2009 year. Mike McAdoo and Gary Yee are to be added as signatories on the bank account. The treasurer will present a financial statement for the 2007-2008 year at the May meeting. Gary Yee was nominated for the post of President for the 2008-2009 year. Elections for the five officer positions will take place at the May meeting. President Wayne Padgett announced that the San Francisco Round Table had been selected to host the November 2010 West Coast Civil War Conference. A June meeting was proposed. It was unanimously agreed to amend the By Laws to provide for this.
Fred Bohmfalk presented an excellent paper on Civil War Baseball to an audience that appeared to include a large number of enthusiastic and knowledgeable ball fans. He covered the development of baseball, from its documentation by Cartwright and Doubleday in the 1840s through the introduction of gloves in 1870. He presented a colorful story of the evolution of fields, uniforms, rules and equipment, and added an overview of baseball stars from the 1920s to the present day. Fred remained unfazed when his overhead projector went up in smoke (literally) and he had to continue without many of the pictures he had prepared. Such were his descriptive powers that some in the room didn't even miss the visual aids.
