The San Francisco Civil War Round Table Meeting 20th December 2012
|
The President called the meeting to order at 7:45pm.
Members and their guests recited the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Gildo Lopez.
It being December, the Ormond Eckley Award was
presented to a member who had made outstanding
contributions to the Round Table. This year's recipient
was Mike McAdoo, who was presented with the
award by Wayne Padgett.
In his remarks, Wayne pointed out that Mike has been
a very long-standing member of the group and chiefly
responsible for its survival through some lean times.
Mike was President for quite a period, is a regular attendee
and major contributor to the discussions at meetings, and
has always been most generous at fund-raising events.
The featured speaker was Phil Avila. His presentation was creatively entitled "The Bear Goes
East" and, of course, dealt with the volunteers from California who went back east en masse and
served with distinction in the 2nd Massachusetts cavalry regiment.
Phil detailed many of their encounters with Mosby's guerillas, not all of which had happy endings.
Following the question period, Program Chair Wayne Padgett announced that our January
speaker will be Tom Lubas who will talk on "Benjamin Butler: Lincoln's Conundrum."
The President wished everyone a Happy Christmas and the meeting adjourned at 8:45pm.
