The Civil War and The Presidio of San Francisco
On Saturday, January 17th, an enthusiastic group walked the Main Post of the Presidio with docent
Bob Bowen and learned about field artillery, infantry, and mounted dragoons; deserters; Erasmus
Keyes, Henry Halleck, William Tecumseh Sherman and Eadweard Muybridge who were among the
cast of characters who played prominent roles in the volatile era from the Gold Rush to the Civil
War, when the Presidio grew from a frontier outpost to a major military installation and defender of
the Golden Gate. The photo shows Bob with the group outside the Wright General Hospital.
