This talk will cover the evolution of the defenses of San Francisco Bay from the first
Spanish defenses at the Presidio through the U.S. Army's major fortification
construction projects of the 1850s and 1860s. Special emphasis will be given to the
1861-1865 period, the threats to the city during the Civil War (both real and
imagined), and the 'emergency' fortifications hastily erected along the waterfront and on
Angel Island. John will include lessons learned during the war about the weaknesses of
the city's defenses and post-war plans to modernize the bay forts.
